Since its inception, The Centre for the Less Good Idea has documented, through film, sound, photography and text, every step of the process of making. From initial ideas and experiments, through to staged performances and exhibited works, The Centre has built up a comprehensive archive of artistic process.
Moments of Making (2023) is a multimedia exhibition and installation that reflects on the playful, intangible, and often-times vulnerable moments that emerge during the pursuit of the less good idea. The exhibition is curated by The Centre's Director of Cinematography & Editor, Noah Cohen.
With a focus on The Centre’s past five Seasons (2019 – 2022), Moments of Making comprises the screening of a documentary film by Cohen and Bukhosibakhe Khoza, a sound installation by Zain Vally, and a photographic exhibition by Zivanai Matangi with textual vignettes by David Mann.
Speaking about the film, Cohen explains that embracing The Centre’s ways of working was central to the process. Here, the process of locating that which is secondary – the peripheral idea, the incidental discovery, the flickering light at the edges – is highlighted and held.
“The film itself is made in the spirit of the less good idea so it’s fragmented, collaged, collaborative, and playful,” explains Cohen. “The hope is that it helps audiences realise and experience what the creative process can look and feel like.”
Similarly, the sound installation, photographic exhibition, and textual fragments work to provide audiences with a better sense of the seemingly imperceptible moments that take place on the stage, in rehearsals, and on the workshop floor.
Altogether, Moments of Making provides a collective record of the unique artistic processes and methodologies that have emerged at The Centre since its inception in 2016.
