The Centre of Somewhere: Johannesburg | Glasgow

HARD BUT FRAGILE | THULISILE BINDA

In July 2024, Centre collaborators Thulisile Binda and Kaldi Makutike showcased their individual works, emerging from the 2022/2023 Centre of Somewhere Residency.

Makutike’s performance, This-Close is an exploration of the artist’s body as a site of ill-health and infirmity, as well as a reflection on how contestation and spirituality manifest in the body.

Binda’s performance, Hard But Fragile, makes use of a series of whips and the body in motion in order to achieve a kind of harmony and meditation, and reflects on how one can gain power from pain.

The Centre of Somewhere is a partnership between The Centre For The Less Good Idea and Take me Somewhere (Glasgow, Scotland) that took place from September 2022 to March 2023. The partnership took the form of an embedded, connective residency project designed to explore new ways of doing, making, connecting, befriending and building international networks.
