In September 2026, Miami Light Project and The Centre for the Less Good Idea took part in the third iteration of a five-year Miami–Johannesburg exchange with an intensive performance residency at The Light Box Studio at Miami Theater Center.
This was also the first year that Miami-based artists were able to travel to South Africa, and saw Britney Tokumoto and Diego Melgar engaging in The Centre’s Collation 5 workshops in July 2026.
Throughout the residency in Miami, artists from South Africa and Miami co-developed new methods and material. This weeklong exchange culminated in The Open Moment, a work-in-progress sharing that opens the studio doors to experimentation, discovery, and the first spark of new performance.
The Centre’s two artists, guided by Athena Mazarakis, were Anathi Conjwa and Billy Langa. Conjwa and Langa opted to create a collaborative work, engaging collective, choral composition, and live foley as a narrative technique.

This is the 3rd year of a unique 5-year international cultural exchange project. This initiative centres on extended creative residencies between Miami and Johannesburg, fostering the creation of new, innovative works through cross-cultural collaboration.

The Centre’s co-founder and director, Bronwyn Lace, travelled to Prague in September 2026 to lead a workshop with ten cross-disciplinary artists at Kunsthalle Praha, culminating in The Open Moment.
The Open Moment took place at Kunsthalle Praha, in conversation with William Kentridge’s exhibition The Battle Between YES and NO which ran from April to September 2026.
Lace’s workshop drew on the methodology of The Centre for the Less Good Idea, exploring collaborative, collective, and secondary thinking.
Devised by the artists and Lace, The Open Moment took the form of a collapsed conference, and extended the logic of the studio or the stage into the realm of the academic conference.
Participants began by constructing a panel discussion before playfully refusing its form, and collapsing and extending it into a live performance.

In June 2026, William Kentridge's 'Apron' (2024) officially opened to the public, functioning as a new link in the visual axis between DAS MINSK Kunsthaus, the Brauhausberg, and Potsdam’s city center.
The sculpture, which depicts an aproned figure caught mid-stride carrying an oversized megaphone in place of an upper body and head, was inaugurated with a special performance by Centre collaborators Thulani Chauke and Arnulf Ballhorn, as well as the screening of a film by Kentridge.
