Simphiwe Bonongo is best known as a hip hop practitioner. Born in soweto, he studied Art and Design at Sedibeng College, and later moved to the Vaal Rand. His interest lies in exploring the intersecting elements of the hip hop art form - beatboxing, breakdancing, fashion, and graffiti. Bonongo appeared in his first stage beatboxing performance in 2011, after moving to Johannesburg, in the stage work Boom Bap vs Swag Rap with KiriPinKnob. Bonongo also did beatboxing work with the Song & Dance theatrical company from 2014, featuring in the musical dance piece with Phuphuma love minors (Ischathamiya group) and The Chants we Make. More recently, Bonongo appeared in Gregory Maqoma’s Cion, as one of the leading vocalists. He has worked to bring beatboxing into the sphere of theatre and hopes to involve other elements of hip hop into a more traditional art scene in the future.
