JUNE 2017 | FOR ONCE | Thulani Chauke

On June 16 South Africans commemorate youth day, the day of the 1976 Soweto Uprising.  This June 16 dancer Thulani Chauke responded to William Kentridge’s film History of The Main Complaint. Chauke was inspired by Kentridge’s investigation into history and the ways in which things are remembered.

As a young South African Chauke hoped to reflect on contemporary South Africa and how current political crises echo the past. In this newly formed piece Chauke aimed to investigate the spectrum of violence currently affecting all South Africans.

Throughout the 30 minute performance, the audience was taken on a journey exploring suffocation, rage, and uncertainty. Chauke’s performance reflected the helplessness of witnessing violence unfold on our doorsteps, and yet his work served to remind us that evil can only thrive when the good do nothing.
